Marketing matters..but so does your name

When setting up your own business, choosing a name can be a thought-provoking process.

As well as your personal preferences for a name, there are many other factors to consider.

Generally, the first thing businesses should be looking into is whether their name reflects what the purpose of their business is, or at least gives an indication.

Other considerations include having a good online presence and the availability of a suitable domain name that isn’t already in use. It’s also important to think about the connotations that your name carries: does it portray the right message that you want to get out there, or does it sound inapplicable to your business?

Arguably, the name isn’t always a major issue to measure success. Many large, successful corporations have some extremely random names yet they depend on a striking, expensive marketing campaign to get them noticed.
Unfortunately smaller businesses don’t always have the financial capacity to commit to this, so getting the name right is even more important.

Many established businesses decide to change their name for various reasons, but this incurs many expenses and is sometimes not legally viable.

In conjunction with the BIP Centre Newcastle, the North East BIC are hosting a free seminar on April 28th entitled What’s In A Name? We are inviting local businesses to attend for advice on registered company names and trademarks, as well as protecting your business name. Taking place here at the BIC from 8am – 10am, this free seminar is not to be missed.
