A report this month claimed that businesses set up by mums…or mams, are flourishing, generating billions of pounds for the UK economy.
According to a study conducted by Development Economics, the value of entrepreneurs, who are also happen to be mothers, is increasing each year. As business support manager at the North East Business and Innovation Centre, I see many mothers wanting to take control of their own careers and become their own bosses. But I do also think the same can be said for fathers too.
There are many benefits to running your own business, in particular if you have small children at home. You might want to become self-employed so that you can spend more time with your family, or to focus on a project you’re passionate about.
Becoming self-employed is a lot to take on, but by taking things step-by-step and getting advice and support from the BIC when you need it, you can make your new business work for your family.
Mother of two, Joanne Cameron came to the BIC in 2013 and started her own business, Remote HR Solutions and is enjoying the work-life balance she has created. This year she also took on another business, Colleagues on Tap. Joanne spoke of the perks:
“I never have to ask if I can take time off now. When I worked for someone else I had to seek permission to take time off for harvest festivals, school trips etc and if the children were ever sick then I had to use parental leave.
“Working for myself now allows me to plan my life, the freedom it brings is tremendous.”
Of course, you must have a good business idea, but you don’t have to come up with something entirely new, just something that’s better.
There are enormous opportunities out there for parents who want to start their own business.
