Social enterprise celebrates six years of climate action
Climate Action North celebrated its sixth anniversary at a special event held at the Washington Wetland Centre. The event brought together over 40 climate supporters comprising volunteers, sponsors, and patrons.
The award-winning community interest company, which is based at the North East BIC in Sunderland, focuses on taking practical action to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis across the North of England while inspiring hope for the future.
Its portfolio of work has mainly been funded by sponsorship from the business community demonstrating their support and commitment to taking practical action. However, anyone can directly support climate action from the comfort of their desk or armchair by becoming a Climate Action North Patron.
Established in 2017, Climate Action North is run by Sharon Lashley, Jennifer Clair Robson, Julie Harrison, and Phil Macari who, after working on a wide variety of climate issues throughout their careers, pooled their experience and expertise to empower people, communities, and businesses to act and ensure a better and more resilient future.
Climate Action North’s managing director, Sharon Lashley, said: “It’s our sixth anniversary and acknowledging our climate champions and supporters is a really important part of our celebrations. It’s brilliant to have the backing of so many local businesses and individuals to help us deliver the necessary action needed. It is these relationships, which are built on trust and reciprocity, that go a long way to seeing us deliver practical and genuine solutions.”
Owners of Darlington based IT Solutions company Resilient Business Systems, Andy and Michelle Read have been long term sponsors of Climate Action North since day one in February 2017 when the company started. They said: “it’s an absolute pleasure to be on this very exciting and meaningful journey with the Climate Action Team and we’re proud to be long term sponsors of their incredibly important work.”
The initiatives include: Pollinator Parks ®, which increases biodiversity and gives people a place to enjoy nature; Global Wilders ®, education activities focused on people, places, plants, and animals to restore nature, and conserve biodiversity; One Small Change, a series of roadshows inspiring climate action; North East Action 4 Rivers focusing on cleaning up rivers in the region; an online Business Action Toolkit helping businesses identify actions to start their net zero journey; and a training academy offering a suite of CPD-accredited courses.
The company also arranges regular online and face-to-face events and conferences, plus litter picks and beach cleans.
Sharon added: “We want as many people and businesses as possible to start taking action to halt and reverse the climate crisis, which is why our wide range of no-nonsense, plain-speaking, and achievable initiatives ensure that there is something for everyone.
Our vision is for a greener, cleaner, nature-rich and thriving world brimming with climate hope and a sustainable future for many generations to come. We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to our corporate sponsors, patrons, and volunteers who support this vital work, and we look forward to another six successful years of climate action.”
