In response to the significant gap in business support for freelancers, the North East Freelance Network – a community-driven platform dedicated to supporting self-employed professionals in the region – has launched a new membership community to meet the unique needs of self-employed professionals in North East England.
The new North East Freelance Network membership community offers a solution to a long-standing challenge: the lack of on going support for freelancers who want to thrive on their own terms.
While businesses aiming to scale, hire teams, or expand internationally often have access to a wealth of support programs, freelancers are frequently left behind. Although early-stage freelancers may find initial guidance, established freelancers who want to remain independent and sustain their careers face a noticeable lack of resources. The North East Freelance Network aims to change that narrative.
Jade Gillham, founder of the North East Freelance Network, said: “Freelancers deserve the same level of support and resources that traditional businesses receive. Many freelancers aren’t looking to create an agency or hire employees, they’re looking to refine their skills, connect with like-minded professionals, and build a sustainable business on their own terms. The North East Freelance Network gives them the space and support to do just that.”
The North East Freelance Network membership, which costs £12.99 a month, has been created to provide freelancers with the tools, community, and support they need to succeed — without the pressure to scale up or build a team. The membership is designed to support practitioners who are passionate about their craft and want to build a thriving, sustainable freelance business.
Members of the North East Freelance Network community gain access to an exclusive range of benefits, including:
- Regular in-person coworking and networking events, offering freelancers the chance to connect, collaborate, and stay motivated.
- Expert-led workshops and guest speaker sessions.
- Peer support – a private online discussion forum where freelancers can ask questions, swap skills, and share advice with a community of people who understand the unique challenges of freelance life.
- Monthly events and activities – from netwalking meetups along the coast to virtual coworking sessions, the North East Freelance Network’s event programme ensures members have ample opportunity to connect and collaborate.
Jade continued: “Unlike many traditional business support programs that prioritise growth through team expansion, the North East Freelance Network recognises that not all freelancers want to scale in the traditional sense. Instead, this community is built around the idea of sustainable growth, peer connection, and professional development. The platform offers a space for freelancers to be seen, heard, and supported; providing the resources to help them succeed as self-employed professionals.”
Rita Callender, Business Adviser at the North East BIC, said: “I’m delighted to support the launch of the North East Freelance Network. This fantastic platform is designed to empower freelancers by offering essential resources, networking opportunities, and a vibrant, collaborative community where everyone can grow and succeed together.
“If you’re a freelancer in the region, I invite you to join the network and explore the amazing opportunities and support it provides. The North East BIC is proud to be part of the Enterprising North consortium, working alongside 11 other support organisations to ensure every freelancer, self-employed professional, and solopreneur in the North East has the tools they need to thrive.”
Colin Lynch, Enterprise Coach at Smarta, said: “Finding a space where freelancers from diverse backgrounds can come together to share ideas and showcase their skills in a supportive environment is no small feat. Jade has dedicated herself to building this network for freelancers, and I am truly excited to be part of it.”
