A pioneering programme, which helps prepare Sunderland’s young people for the world of work, is once again supporting National Apprenticeship Week.
Work Discovery Sunderland – now in its sixth year – runs a year-round calendar of events including guest speaker days, sector days and Work Discovery Week, which takes place each summer.
And, for the second consecutive year, the project is giving employers across the region the opportunity to showcase their own apprenticeship schemes to future generations as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2018.
Held from 5 to 9 March across the UK, it will showcase the success of apprentices working in a range of different industries and celebrate the positive impact apprenticeships and traineeships have on individuals, businesses and the economy.
The Work Discovery Sunderland programme, created by the city’s Economic Leadership Board’s Business Schools Task Group , is now calling on businesses from across Sunderland and the North East to get on board.
“We are looking for as many businesses as possible who are happy to get involved in and host activities such as business visits, workshops or business talks in schools, throughout the five-day period,” said Paul McEldon, co-chair of Work Discovery Sunderland.
“The reason Work Discovery Sunderland has been such a success, is that it introduces employers to young people keen to enter the workplace,” he said.
“And apprenticeships are a great way to fast track a career, which is why we are delighted to support National Apprenticeship Week 2018.”
Other 2018 activities planned by Work Discovery Sunderland include specific sector days and Work Discovery Week 2018, which will run from 25 – 29 June and is supported by Sunderland City Council, SAFC and the NEECC.
The week has already won support from numerous major sponsors, including MAKE IT Sunderland, Sunderland College, the University of Sunderland, the Bridges, Gentoo, Liebherr, Nissan and Calsonic Kansei.
